Just like anything else around your house, your pillows and comforters collect dirt over time. The build-up of sweat and dead skin cells is loved by dust mites who thrive in such conditions. That is why your bedroom essentials need to be thrown into the washer once in a while. Here are a few tips on how to clean and care for them.

Getting them nice and clean

In general, you don’t need to wash your pillows and comforters that often – once or twice a year is more than enough to keep them fresh. Plan to wash two pillows at a time so that the load is balanced, and the detergent distributes evenly. When washing comforters, consider how bulky they are and leave enough room in the drum for them to move freely.

When choosing the cycle, opt for Bedding or Duvet if possible. If these programs are not available on your machine, choose a cool temperature for down or feather materials and a gentle cycle for polyester. When in doubt, check the label and follow the instructions noted there.

Don’t overdo the detergent. Adding too much will leave soap residue in your covers, that will not only make them feel flat, but also propagate bacteria. So, when dosing, make sure to carefully follow the instructions provided on the back of the detergent bottle you’re using.

How to dry them for ultimate freshness

Having a dryer is essential for keeping your pillows and comforters in good shape. That is because the constant movement will prevent the filling from clumping together. With pillows, toss a couple of tennis balls in the drum. This will keep the pillows fluffy.

Check your dryer cycle options – if you use the Home Connect app and a smart washing machine, choose Down Wear and Pillows if possible. This will ensure the optimal drying temperature and movement.

Are allergies bothering you?

If you’re sensitive to dust, it might be a good idea to take extra time to take care of your pillows and covers. You can choose to wash them more often (around four times a year) or throw them in a dryer every four weeks or so. Also, when choosing the wash cycle, go for Allergy Plus (Bosch) or Hygiene (Siemens), as it ensures a thorough wash that is less likely to irritate your nose and skin.
